David Luther

for Watauga County Commissioner
District 2 needs someone who shows up to fight for you and your vote, not an appointee who shows up for photo ops and votes "Aye" to everything. Let's bring real experience of real life and fresh perspective to local government — we have too much in common to get stuck on red vs. blue and town vs. county.

Who I Am

David Luther - Deep Gap Firefighter

I'm a husband and dad living in Boone, where my family works, plays, and calls home. I'm a Deep Gap firefighter and a veteran who believes in service and building a better community for all people, whether that's responding to emergencies, serving on local boards, or doorknocking for other Democrats.

This campaign started the way most of my days do: Juggling childcare, work, fire calls, a graduate degree program, and getting things done in our commmunity. That's the reality for everyone in Watauga County, and that's the perspective I'll bring to the Board of Commissioners.

David Luther and family at Highland Games

I've never held public office, and I don't have any bad habits to break. I believe in showing who I am by doing the work: volunteering with nonprofits, registering voters, canvassing, serving on the Boone Board of Adjustment, and showing up when it matters.

District 2 runs from Boone to Deep Gap along the New River — the communities where I live and serve. I'm running because local government should work for the people who actually live here, not just candidates who want to polish their resumes or state legislators who want to gerrymander our voices into oblivion.

What I Stand For

Real Experience

From the responding to Helene with fire department to community boards, I've spent years serving Watauga County. I know how local government works — and where it doesn't. I've watched the current, undemocratic commission vote unanimously and the previous one get little done; I'll build consensus for the right issues and fight back against the wrong ones.

Fresh Perspective

Politics needs people with recent experience of real life, not wannabe career politicians seeking relevance. I'm raising a family here and navigating the same challenges you are, like affordable housing and childcare. I seek value-based, data-backed, and practical results rather than the sound of my own voice.

Community First

I've volunteered, organized, and shown up for this community long before I was asked to run. That won't change when I'm elected. I'll still answer medical emergencies in the middle of the night, visit nursing homes to advocate for the elderly, drive the chronically ill to their appointments, and serve the neediest in our community — I'm just expanding the scope.

Let's Build Something Better

District 2 deserves a commissioner who shows up, listens, and fights for working families, as well as the faculty and students who form the core of our town. I'm ready to do that work — and I'd be honored to have your support.
